UN System equips monitoring and sensitization committees for social cohesion in Tonkpi region

In a bid to render operational the committees for the monitoring of social cohesion in the four divisions of Tonkpi region, the UN System on Monday 3 March 2014 donated 100 chairs, two canopies, a motorcycle and a public address system to each of the administrative unit. These include Man, Biankouma, Danane, and Zouan-Hounien.

The donations were made within the context of the Immediate Response Fund project of the Peace- building Fund of the UN System in support of activities of the monitoring and sensitization committees in these areas located in the west and south-west of the country that are facing social cohesion challenges. The gesture follows recommendations resulting from a seminar organized in May 2012 for local administrative authorities by the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the General Directorate of Territorial Administration.

The donations were received at the Prefecture of Man (600 km north-west of Abidjan) in a ceremony presided over by the Prefect of Tonkpi Region,Jerome Soro Kayaha and attended by the entire prefectural corps of the divisions concerned.

"UNOCI and UNDP are handing over this equipment to assist you in accomplishing your mission to maintain social cohesion and national reconciliation in order to consolidate peace," the interim coordinator of UNOCI's Regional Office in Man, Christian Dreesen said on behalf of the donors.
On behalf of the recipients, the Prefect of Tonkpi Region thanked UNOCI and the UN System for their constant support for the restoration of peace in Cote d'Ivoire. "This gift has come to satisfy the needs of the monitoring and sensitization committees. Rest assured we shall make good use of it in the accomplishment of our mission," Mr. Jerome Kayaha promised.
