UN independent expert on human rights in Cote d’Ivoire meets Special Representative

"{My mandate as independent expert on the human rights situation in Cote d'Ivoire was created by the Human Rights Council to support the work of the UN in Cote d'Ivoire. I wanted to reiterate to the Special Representative my readiness to support her in accomplishing this extremely important mandate conferred on her}," the UN independent expert on human rights in Cote d'Ivoire, Doudou Diene declared after a meeting with the Special Representative on 23 October 2013.

The meeting at the UN Mission HQ in Abidjan also reviewed the current human rights situation in Cote d'Ivoire during which Mr. Diene stressed the importance of an impartial and equitable justice and the need to find concrete solutions to social questions. He noted that Cote d'Ivoire had succeeded in rebuilding democratic and human rights institutions, saying "{important institutions necessary for the restoration of democracy have been created}."

All the same Mr. Diene remarked that "{this democratic reconstruction which was strengthened by the release on bail of certain members of the opposition has been weakened by a return to political intransigence especially in public pronouncements and behavior. I am worried about this. It is important to be vigilant,"} he concluded.

During his 10-day mission, the independent human rights expert held discussions with representatives of the UN, the Ivorian government, political parties, associations of victims of human rights violation, civil society as well as heads of institutions.
