Deputy Special Representative participates in intercommunity meeting to strengthen social cohesion in Fresco

The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Côte d'Ivoire, Mr. Mbaye Babacar Cissé, on Wednesday, 12 August 2015, participated in the closing ceremony of an intercommunity meeting in Fresco, initiated by the Civil Affairs Section of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI).

The objective of the meeting was to created a platform of exchange between the different communities so that that together they can find solutions to the problems which hinder reconciliation, social cohesion and local development. During three days, between 10 and 12 August 2015, people from the different communities held discussions, listened to each other and tried to understand each other and suggest ways of resolving problems.

In his address to participants and the people of Fresco during the concluding stages of the workshops, Mr. Cissé invited them to respecte the commitments they had made. « Commitments have been made during these discussions and we all wish for the elections to be peaceful and we all hope that the politicians will respect this. We also hope that people from the different departments will adhere to the process and that there will be non hate speeches. Everyone has suffered enough from the crisis and it is now time to turn the page and think of rebuilding the country, » he added.

For his part, the Prefect of Fresco, Djenzou Konan welcomed the holding of the intercommunity meetings and urged people to create the right conditions for a peaceful climate. «A peaceful social climate is a necessary condition to attain the objectives for emergence. This is the price for preserving what is dear to us, » he insisted.

It should be noted that the resolutions and recommendations which emerged from the three days of the intercommunity dialogue focused mainly on promoting knowledge of land ownership laws, organising sensitisation sessions on strengthening social cohesion, improving security, creating employment for young people and facilitating regular discussions between local dignitaries and elected officials of Fresco.

The women of Fresco, for their part, made a resolution to work hand in hand with each other. « We, the women of Fresco, make a commitment to set up an association which will wlecome all women without distinction, » said Mrs Gbaty Cecile, spokesperson for the women.
