The security situation in South Sudan continues to deteriorate, with parties to the peace agreement engaged in military confrontations and persistent intercommunal conflict causing immense harm to communities across the country.

Mandated under Chapter Seven of the United Nations Charter, UNMISS’ military peacekeepers support the creation of a safe and secure environment that enables the mission to implement its mandate and establish conditions necessary for stability in South Sudan.

While the Government of South Sudan is primarily responsible for protecting civilians, the military peacekeepers support the prevention, mitigation, and resolution of conflict and the creation of a secure, stable environment.

They physically protect civilians under imminent threat of physical violence, facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid and provide protection for civilian humanitarian and development actors, and support to security sector reform.

Engineering contingents construct and rehabilitate thousands of kilometers of roads, enabling safe movement, trade and economic growth, as well as helping communities connect for peacebuilding. They also build and maintain vast networks of dykes, protecting hundreds of thousands of people affected by extraordinary flooding.

Military peacekeepers support local communities through the provision of healthcare and veterinary services, which are crucial to maintaining livelihoods, conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

The military engages with the host government in building the capacity of military institutions and the reintegration of various armed groups, and protect United Nations personnel, installations, and equipment.
