TRIPOLI – On behalf of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the Libyan people on the 74th anniversary of their national independence.
Today, UNSMIL pays tribute to the resilience, dignity and strength demonstrated by the Libyan people in the face of challenges. We respect and honour their aspirations for peace, stability, and a future built on solidarity, equality of opportunity, inclusive development, justice and the rule of law.
As the country honours the sacrifices made by your ancestors who shaped the growth of the Libyan nation and entrenched its independence, UNSMIL reiterates its call on national leaders and institutions to rise above political and regional divides to create a shared political vision for the country’s peaceful and prosperous future.
We encourage all to engage in good faith to take the necessary steps to unify and build strong state institutions to anchor the country’s peace and stability; undertake critical economic reforms; and work towards the conduct of peaceful, inclusive and credible elections that will reflect the will of the people.
Independence is not only a moment in history, but a continuous effort to build a state that prioritizes peace, security and development and puts all its citizens best interests at the heart of all national endeavors.
UNSMIL and the United Nations as a whole stands by you in your aspirations for a stable and prosperous future.
