UNDP Regional Director for Africa pays visit to Special Representative

The Regional Director of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) for Africa, Mr. Abdoulaye Mar Dieye accompanied by UNDP representatives in Cote d'Ivoire on 28 October 2013 paid a visit to the Special Representative of UN Secretary-General for Cote d'Ivoire, Mrs. Aichatou Mindaoudou.



"{We came to give our regards to the Special Representative and to review a number of issues related to work of the UN country team and to get her orientations toward intensifying the support of the UN System to the economic and social recovery of Cote d'Ivoire as well as the national reconciliation process}," Mr. Dieye said.



Regarding support to the economy, Mr. Dieye was of the opinion that given the resumption of economic growth in Cote d'Ivoire, it was important now to put more emphasis on the social aspect. "{Cote d'Ivoire

is regaining its previous level of economic growth but economic growth in itself is not enough to restore peace and security. It would be necessary to invest a lot in the social sector, in community development and it is in this direction that the UN System, under the leadership of the Special Representative, intends to assist the Government to achieve economic and social development in the integral and integrated sense of the word}," he explained.



"{Growth must be felt by the society and the country at large," Mr. Dieye pointed out, adding: "It is toward this end that we are going to support the decentralization, disarmament and reintegration processes. This is the investment required to consolidate social peace}."



Between 2003 and 2006, the UNDP Regional Director for Africa, Abdoulaye Mar Dieye was Deputy Special Representative of UN Secretary-General and Resident UN Coordinator for Cote d'Ivoire.
